Adult Workshop: How to be a Citizen Scientist
Adult Workshop: How to be a Citizen Scientist31st May 2025, 10:00 to 13:00 at Sutton Courtenay Environmental Education Centre (23.7 miles)
Learn how to be a citizen scientist using your smart phone to record butterflies and day-flying moths.
Being a citizen scientist is an interesting and incredibly rewarding way of contributing to the collection of scientific data for the purposes of conservation.
Without being an expert, you can use free, downloadable apps on your smart phone to record birds, butterflies, plants and other living things in your area.
We will start with a short presentation indoors. This will include an introduction to the iRecord and iNaturalist apps. (Details will be sent to attendees beforehand to ensure that you can successfully download the apps onto your phones before the workshop.)
We aim to spend most of the session outdoors on our beautiful nature reserve. At SCEEC we are celebrating butterflies this spring and how we can help them, so there will be a particular focus on butterflies and day-flying moths.
Coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided. The course ends at 1pm, but you’re very welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy on the reserve afterwards.
We are committed to keeping our visitors, staff and volunteers safe. Please DO NOT attend if you or your child are unwell, or testing positive for an infectious illness, such as COVID-19. Your consideration is hugely appreciated.
Please note the centre is accessible by public transport with regular buses (including connection to Didcot Parkway railway station) serving Milton Park, a few minutes walk from the centre.
Will you help answer nature's SOS call by adding a £5 gift to this booking? You'll help BBOWT bring nature back across our three counties. Please select a donation ticket option if you wish to donate. You can find out more about our Nature Recovery Fund here.
